Second How we doing today, Feeling good, Been a. It's been a fun weekend We did. We did some eggs out of a helicopter yesterday. It was good stuff. Y'all have fun. Just a couple of y'all. The rest of y'all are about to take a nap. I got you. I got you. Hey, I want to thank you guys so much for coming to the first service. That'll provide space for all those who have, said that they're coming to the second service. Thank you guys so much for that. I know you had to get up a little bit earlier to come hang out, but, it's going to make some space. It'd be crazy in the second service. Anyways, today I've been thinking- I know it's Easter, but I'm one of those guys. Anyone done the inagram before? Oh, y'all should go back and do the inagram. It'd be good moments of self-discovery for you and your family. You should do it. You'd learn a little bit about yourself. In fact, some of the things that have been unlocked in my life happened through these weird personality tests. It's good to find out about your personality. That's where I learned that I was a crazy person. But I was doing the inagram and I got an eight on the inagram, which, since you don't know, because none of y'all did it. It's a challenger, It's somebody who likes to challenge the status quo, And so, for me, I tend to challenge the status quo, And I know it's Easter and I'm going to preach you a resurrection message. But I don't know. Every time I'm prepping an Easter message, probably the 10th, 12th, 14th Easter message that I've preached. I'm trying to like not do the same thing every year, And as I was praying about what the Lord would give me, he gave me something that I think is very simple, but could be very helpful for you. But before I jump into it, what I want to do is I want to read: We going to use this today. I like a handheld mic. It gives me more control. You know what I'm saying. It's Easter. Y'all got to be a little bit more talkbacky than this. Do you like the new arrangement? Yeah, Feels weird to me. I can't. I don't like this. We're going to be in Luke, chapter 24. We're going to begin in verse 17. So I'm going to pull it up here. It's the only thing about handhelds. You got to hold a Bible with one hand and a microphone with the other one. All right, Verse 17 says this. He asked them: "What are you discussing together as you walk along". I got to give you some context for this. What happens is Jesus's risen from the grave. And there were women, who brought spices to the tomb and found that the tomb was empty. Jesus wasn't there. There were two men who stood in white who told them: "What are you doing here? He's not here. He's risen. And the women were afraid at first, but then they kind of got the message, remembered the things that Jesus said. He said he was going to be crucified And then he said he was going to rise from the grave. So the women, the first ones to remember, they go report it to many of the disciples who were still kind of sleeping from Sabbath day, the day before, And they wake him up and they tell them what happened. And, just to be honest with you, they responded like many of us probably would: They didn't believe him. They didn't believe him. Other passages would tell us that, Peter and John, they run to the tomb because you know they're wondering what the women are talking about. But in this passage we don't get as much information. But they come back to the tomb and it says that they did not believe him. It says: "Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves and he went away wondering to himself what had happened. And on that same day, there's another group of disciples who had chosen not to go to the tomb. And they're walking along and they meet a man. There's your context, Verse 17. He asked them: "What are you discussing together as you walk along"? They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopus, asked him: "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? What things He asked About Jesus of Nazareth? They replied He was a prophet powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death and they crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And, what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it, just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus, And I'm going to read a little bit more into this in a few moments. But as I was looking at this passage it really connected with me because I happen to be a person very similar to Cleopus and the other disciple. I'm a little downcast. Anyone in here willing to admit boldly that that they can be downcast sometime They have a negative perspective. Let me put it this way: Many of you are like me. When someone comes up to you and they say, "I've got good news and bad news", Which one do you want to hear? First, If you're like me, you say bad news. Now, those of you who are probably the rarity in this room who said good news, I want you to know you are invited to keep coming to this church. I love you. You've got a perfect perspective already. Keep coming with that positive perspective. I need it because my default flesh level position tends to be: I'm a realist. You know I can be pessimistic, pessimistic on occasion. There's a difference between realism and pessimism, but there's also a difference between realism and optimism, and I'm trying to figure out the difference And the Lord is calling me to be more optimistic, but I still connect with these disciples who feel downcast. I would rather hear the bad news first, because that's what I'm going to dwell on And if you're with me, you're the same way that you might hear an influx of good news, But if there's a little bad news, that's all that you dwell on. I, I think we as a culture tend to appreciate bad news, And what I mean by that is: maybe you don't like the bad news, but that's what sticks in your brain. You might even be addicted to bad news And as as a little research, I used to be a research guy. I used to like research. I was like a TA at a, at a, at a seminary It was. I was, I wasn't smart, but they gave me the position, so it was cool And I used to do a lot of research. And so this week I did some research And I was just trying to gauge, like, how addicted are we to bad news versus good news? And I went and looked at the Washington Post and I looked up all the top viewed articles for the past year. Are you interested in hearing a couple of them. No, None of y'all You. Hey, I know it's nine o'clock, but we got, we got. We got to level it up a little bit. It's Easter, He is risen. We can raise our perspectives and we can raise our tone. Come on, somebody, Raise it up. Let's raise our voices. You talk back, Talk back. They're going to be on the screen. Here's the first one, And this is not political. I just that this is Washington Post, not me Washington Post. Here's the first one. Trump's DC US attorney pick appeared on Russian state media over 150 times. Is that good news or bad news? I don't. I'm not saying: do you agree with it or not? Is it good news or bad news? Bad news. Let's go to the next one. In a town inundated by flood water, one house remained dry. That's kind of a mixed one. Right, It's good news and bad news. It came together. That's a good article. No wonder it was viewed so heavily. The next one: this is the top 10 of the last year. Justice Department must provide details of attempts to return illegally deported man. Judge says- now I'm not saying any opinion- that that's not good news. I don't like. That's stressful, All right. Next, Two US service members deployed for border mission killed in vehicle rollover. The next one: Biden, breaking his silence, slams Trump on social security cuts. Justice Department says it will sue Maine Education Department over refusal to comply with trans athlete ban. Next, Russia set to end energy ceasefire with Ukraine. Even as fighting rages, They tried. Here's a good one: Colossal squid captured on video in deep sea for the first time. Come on, celebrate that good news. Ain't no one ever y'all, don't care about a squid. Next, Harvard girded Trump. Oh, girded for Trump. Fight by raising funds and preparing PR Battlefield. Is there another one? Teams plead guilty to trafficking after being, after being caught with 5,000 ants. I didn't make these up, This is the truth. Washington Post top viewed articles of 2024. In 2025, you might not have needed that, but I thought it was clever and funny. So here's the thing: We have a we have a preference for bad news over good news. Yet it's not good for us to look at bad news more than we look at good news. I it's, it's difficult, And in your family it's the same way. At your work it's the same way. Like at your job, like how many of you have a manager, supervisor, somebody, Y'all all own your own businesses. Nobody dude, All right Giving series. Here we go. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding, But like if your boss or someone at your work they want to tell you something to help you incrementally increase your performance, they're going to give you what they call a compliment sandwich. Anyone ever heard of the compliment sandwich? Come on. So compliment sandwich is dope. It's super cool. I'm trying to use it. It doesn't work. When I do it I'm still learning. But a compliment sandwich is when they start with good news, positive intent. Then they give you the, the incremental thing they want you to improve on, and then they finish it. But you're amazing, called by God, loved all this other. They might not say all that stuff at your workplace, but that's what. That's what we kind of say at the end of a compliment sandwich. Right, And when you hear that compliment sandwich, does it work on you? Yes or no? Some of y'all, that's good. I like you too. For me, no. They tried it. They told me the good news, the bad news, then the good news, but I could only hear the bad news. This is how it works for me in my professional life. At at home it's the same way. Your spouse literally lives with you, loves you had kids with you, bought a house with you, combined bank accounts with you, went with you across the country. If you got that promotion, dealt calmly with you for being a dummy. At the social gathering after you drank too much, stayed with you when you were being crazy. They clean up after you. Put food on the table. Do the yard work. Help coach baseball ran your finances, overlooked the time where you gained that weight. But you are remembering all the bad news. The dishes aren't done. They're always focused on work. We aren't on the same page with the kids. It's been a month since we last hung out When- Hey, that was good. When you going to work out again. Like, like you do this. You, you have a like, like a pre like. You have a predisposition to focusing on bad news. You do this in your head too. Like, think about the generational curses you've broke in your life. Some of you were the first to graduate high school, first to graduate college. First to graduate postgrad, first to make more than 100k- Some of you still getting. That's okay. But, like, some of you were the first to do that, first to own a home, first to have stability, first to go to church. You might be the first to manage direct reports at your job and your family was just used to going to shift work. You might have been the first to make strides in your family in specific areas, But because of our focus on the bad news and the negativity, you think you got all these things going. But I'm stupid. I'm not good at being a parent. I'm struggling to be a good spouse. I'm not great at reading or typing. I can't lead people. I'm an addict to this or that. I'm a workaholic. I'm emotionally unavailable. I'm not self-aware. I'm a basket case. I've heard some people say, or just simply put: I'm not where I had hoped I would be. All this good news, but our focus is on bad news. The church- maybe not your church, but the church in general- has struggled with this overfocus on bad news versus good news. And there are a lot of great churches out there trying to focus on the right things, But you've seen the church that maybe focuses more on the bad than they are on the positive. This is like the church that says: "Do you want to go to hell? No, Better, get saved. You're a sinner from birth. There's nothing good about you, Not one thing. If you died tonight, where would you go". You heard that before. I heard it before. I'm not saying none of it's true, cuz there's real bad news in the world, But I think it's helpful for us if we can focus on good news. And when I was I was prepping for my message, the sermon title came to mind And this will be our sermon title for today: Good news first, Good news first. And when someone asks you that question, this is a little basic assignment for you: Do you want the bad news or the good news first? Try the good news first and see what happens. It was funny because I was prepping this message and it was like: good news, good news, good news. And my daughter's been watching Wicked. Anyone seen Wicked? My daughter's been watching Wicked for every day since it came out And, we let her watch it because it's good music and we're trying to work on her pitch so that eventually she'll be a worship leader or something like that. But I kept talking about Good News and Good News used to be like: blessed are the feet of those who come with good news. The only thing that kept ringing through my head is that first song: good news, she's dead. Anyone remember That's? That's all that kept coming into my mind. And it is good news that Jesus is died because he raised from the grave and now we have forgiveness of our sins. But I couldn't get past it. So good news first is what I'm thinking through today. And the two disciples on the road to Emmas defaulted to the bad news. You can even look at how they described to the man that they were walking with, how, how focused they were on the bad news, Like one sign that you might be more focused on the bad news is very similar to me is someone sees something great happen. They ask you: "Hey, what happened". And then, rather than posturing yourself with all of the good news in mind so that you can passionately share to them what you experienced, you simply list out the data of the things that happened. And this is what these men do. They said: "Well, you know like. Here's a little summary of the things that occurred. It's right here in verse 18.", Said one of them. Asked him: "Are you the only one visiting" Right? He said: "What things" About Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet powerful in word and deed. Before God and all the people, The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death and they crucified him. We had hoped he was the Messiah who was going to redeem Israel And, what is more, it's the third day since this took place. In addition, who says, in addition, when they're passionate? Nobody. That's when you're writing a paper. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find his body. Then they came and told us these crazy things about a vision of angels who said he was alive. Then some of our friends, our companions. They went to the tomb and found it, just as a woman had said, but they didn't see Jesus. They were listing the data, but they were missing what happened. And many of us we've been so used to the bad news. We're just listing the data. Anyone who's on our leadership team knows that I default to this. I got the spirit. It's at war against the flesh in me. I'm still trying to grow. Yesterday, we had 5,500 plus people show up at this little thing. That happened and someone called me up and they said: "How did it go? It looked awesome on social media". And I said, "Well, it was fun. There were a lot of people. They came. Some people got mad. We didn't expect that. We responded to them on Facebook. Then later in the evening, I saw a Tik Tok post that we were in the news. And then I looked at the first comment, and the first comment says something about pastor having a lot of money. That was interesting, That was cool And I kept. I just I was listing the data and the dude- it's one of my coaches. He stopped me and he said: "Matt, won't you say that again and tell me what really happened". This focus we have on bad news prevents us from actually understanding fully what is happening. And when we look at the good news, right you, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, he died on the cross, which sounds like bad news, it's actually really good news, because without his sacrifice, you have no life in eternity. And then, on the third day, he rose from the grave. And when he rose from the grave, what does that do? It validates what he did on the cross. And then it tells us that if he can beat death, then he can do anything natural or supernatural in our lives. It's not just, he's not there. And- and I want us as a church to have this posture- that we're willing to go crazy in terms of self-sacrifice to see God do something out here in this valley, And when we do something like this, yes, we're going to be physically tired, or we're going to be thinking certain things, or we're just going to be exhausted mentally. Whatever it is, the truth of the story is that God developed people yesterday. The truth of the story is that there were a lot of people we didn't know and now I got their data. What I say is present data is future deliverance. Somebody- Yeah, they go, they come in one day. Hey, and here's, here's a fun thing, and you don't- you might not know this-, that there were people who signed up to come to an event in July of 2023 when we first did our social, and tons of people signed up. I didn't see them at the social, but there's still some. Even four weeks ago, they showed up at church for the first time And I said: "How'd you hear about us" And they said: "Back in 2023, we signed up for an event, never went to it, but now we're here" And this is what we're doing. The truth of the story is a lot of people came yesterday and they're gonna start that much closer to Jesus And I'm really, really excited about what's going to happen. Don't let the bad news cause you to simply list out data but miss the meaning and the deliverance and the help that God provides you in your life. But I want to give you two points today And I'm gonna keep it short. At least I'm saying I'm going to keep it short. I hope I'm a man of my word. The first point is: good news first reframes the facts. Good news first reframes the fact. There's a study that was done back in 1946. It's called the Solomon Ash study And just because I want you to interact more, has anyone heard of the Solomon Ash study? Yes, None of y'all. I get to tell you something you don't know today. And it was a study where there were 123 college students. They were split into two groups, an A group and a B-group, And it's so simple. In the first group they gave them a list of adjectives to describe a fictional person And in the second group they gave them the same list of adjectives but they flipped the adjectives And here's what they were. Group A was given the following adjectives to describe this fictional person: Intelligent, industrious, impulsive, critical, stubborn, envious. Group B was given envious, stubborn, critical, impulsive, industrious and intelligent Which one- Group A or group B- liked the person. Group A Why? Because the good news, the good information, the nice adjectives were given to them first. And it's an interesting thing because I know you're all intelligent enough to delineate, between these sets of adjectives and make a full holistic determination about a person and utilizing all of them together. But our biology just makes it to where what you hear first or see first has a huge, has a huge impact on what you actually think about the event. It's called the primacy effect, where what we hear first or see first determines how we actually view the thing, regardless of whether we're right or wrong. That's why when you take bad news first, often it's going to negatively impact or sour the good news. But if you take good news first, it could shift it. The primacy effect is the cognitive bias that says what we encounter first disproportionately frames our interpretation of everything that follows. And the two disciples, like they didn't, they didn't start with the good news, like they started with literally what happened and it started with kind of some some negative information. Yet there's information that they have in the docket that in that it's really important to keep in mind. But what they listed or what we should have listed or they should have listed, is this, rather than saying that Jesus died, was handed over to the chief priests, and then these women said this, and then you know, they saw some angels and then they came back and then some of our companion companions said that no one was there in the tomb. What if they had flipped it with a different headline or a more, positive reality? What if they started not with the death of Christ, not with the factual information, but with the- the most important thing. I've got it here- If they started with the information? The tomb is empty. I'm just flipping it for you. The tomb is empty. The women said messengers told them that Jesus is alive. We thought he'd redeem Israel. It's the third day, which is something Jesus said was relevant. He was handed over to the chief priests and Pharisees to be executed. Before that, He was a prophet powerful in word and deed, And what happens here is the tomb is empty, becomes the headline, after which everything follows. And this might not seem like a big deal to you, but genuinely, for your biology, it is so crucial If you wake up in the morning and you think it's going to be a day, or if you wake up in the and you start with: the tomb is empty, how do you think your day is going to go? I know you got to think a few things after that, But here's what that might look like for you. Oop, sorry, Instead of, I got a lot to do today. Hopefully it's better than yesterday. I'll try to get time to remember the invisible God. That is only sort of relevant in my life. The kids need to get to school. Oh, they got no breakfast. Before I get up, let me grab my phone and check my email. Look at IG-, check the news. Or my stock market-, my stocks in the stock market. Or my checking account. Or my calendar. I could flip the script and start with the positive: The tomb is empty, I'm alive, My spouse is right next to me, I've got kids to annoy me, I've got food to put in their lunchbox. I've got a lot to do today, but it's just today, And because the tomb is empty, I have an eternity with God. It's a flip, And I love that. The man who we find out later is Jesus talking to the people. In verse 25, it says this: He said to them: "How foolish you are and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory". And, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning, concerning himself. And there are two things that stood out to me. The first was it was all there already. All the information was there, But Jesus, for them, helped them reframe the conversation. He looked all the way through the law, the prophets, Moses, all the information that they had at their disposal, that they had interpreted incorrectly for this would-be Messiah that would redeem them from the clenches of or the clutches of Rome. Instead, Jesus reframes it and helps him understand that the Messiah must suffer at the hands of the chief priests in order to go into glory and do what was necessary for us to have salvation. He reframed it. And the good. Here's the thing that good news does. Good news, first, will reframe the facts in your life, And I know that you might be struggling financially. I know that you might be struggling in your family, I know that you might be struggling to comprehend certain things you want to comprehend or at work in any other area of your life. But while those facts exist, there are also a much greater set of facts present that could really help you get through your day. Every single day, the Bible says his mercies are new. Every single day we get to wake up and if we trust in Jesus, we get to live a resurrected life. The fact that he is risen gives us a whole new set of framing for the facts that are around us. And if you could wake up in the morning, instead of stressed about your day, thinking about the fact that the tomb is empty, that Jesus rose, that he's seated at the right hand of the father, that he will return one day to redeem those who have trusted in him, That's that's a much better starting point. Like when you do that, you are physiologically and spiritually setting yourself up for a great day, And even if it's not a great day, you're setting yourself up for the resilience necessary to get through a hard day. And here's the second thing good news does. Good news first rewires your entire being. In. Verse 28 says this: as they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if it were going far, if he were going farther, But they urged him strongly: "Stay with us, for it's nearly evening, The day is almost over". So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were open and they recognized him and he disappeared from their sight. They asked one another: "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us". When Jesus came, he was bringing the Gospel, which means good news, And every time he would speak- and we have these words on paper- every time he would speak, there was something about the good news of Jesus that has the capacity to rewire your own physiology. I mean, I'm not going to give you science because I didn't study that stuff. I'm just going to give you what the Scriptures say. And it says this: "Their hearts were burning, The seed of the emotions was heavily impacted by the words of Jesus" And what you've got to know is: good news has a effect on how you operate, how you feel, how you think. Good news first would be a way that you could live. That will actually help you become more and more resilient. And I'm not saying that there's not bad news 100%, Like you might be walking through something that some people in the room aren't walking through. I have ministered to people over the past couple of weeks who are dealing with things that I've never experienced before in my life And I can't even begin to empathize with what they're dealing with. But the problem is an unbalanced focus on the bad news over and against good news leaves you sad, anxious, depressed, hurried, stressed and empty. But when you flip it and focus on the good news, it actually reverses those very same emotions. You can say it this way: When you recognize the tomb is empty, it leaves you less empty at the end of the day. And you know, when it comes to the church, I've always been baffled by people who stand on the street corner telling people that if they don't know Jesus they're going to go to hell. I've always been baffled by people who come in and immediately give the good news, or good, give the bad news, and neglect the good news, Like someone came up to me yesterday and just started with like five pieces of bad news and I'm just trying to process through it, through the first one. By the time he gets to five things and it's just. It's not the way to operate. God has called you to operate at a higher level, And so let's focus on the good news. And then I was convicted yet again because on Friday morning, there were two things that occurred. I've told some of you the things that occurred Now, just so you know, planning an event like this takes a lot of planning, takes a lot of money and, we were ready for it. And Friday morning I came in here and found out the power was going to be off in the entire building. Because they were connecting this new building. You saw the construction coming in and they were connecting this new building and, the power was going to be off. Now, the cool thing is, God was working things out, but do you think my flesh went there? At first, I'm like: what are we going to do? What are we going to do? And then like, immediately after that, there was some things happening. With our lease here, Everything's good. Just want you to know, everything's good. I'm going to tell you that up front. Good news first, Everything's good. At the time, I was trying to figure out an insurance thing, and they hadn't told me about it until the like Friday and it would. It made our event contingent on me solving this problem and we had kind of solved it by the end of Friday. And I get home kind of 8:00 at night and there's still a chance that someone's going to text me and say, "Hey, you can't have the event because of this". I'm just laying there, I don't know if you can like empathize with where I was at in that moment. I was laying there and I was thinking about all the whatifs, I was anxious, I was, I was feeling the pressure, I was stressed out And when I was laying there, the Lord convicted me, And he says this all the time to me. He said: "Hey, you, you wrote your sermon, didn't you Remember it? And also remember my words". And I just remember the sermon title. While I'm laying there, stressed out at midnight, waking up every two minutes wondering if I got a text message that said we can't have the event, And every time when I would wake up, the Lord would just remind me. Hey, good news first. And the good news wasn't that we were going to have the event. The good news wasn't that, tons of people were going to show up. The good news wasn't, that you know everything was all fine and good. The good news was that, regardless of all of those things, the tomb is empty and I have a savior who's forgiven me of my sin. And I, I be vulnerable with you. I'm vulnerable with you, not not just to make you think I'm a basket case. I'm vulnerable with you because that really happened for me And I know there's something in your life that might be keeping you from recognizing the, the truth or the validity of the good news of Jesus, But that doesn't have to be a barrier for you any longer. You can actually look at the information in such a way that adds life into you, I, I. It benefits you not just in you know, your relationships, your physiology, but it also gives you, ultimately, the good news of Jesus, gives you an eternity with God. And so what I want to do right now is I want to do two things. I want to: one: encourage you to live a life it's so simple: good news first, and they might not ask you that question all the time- for you to choose, but you can choose every day whether you're going to start with the good news or the bad news when you wake up, start with good news. When you're having a conversation with somebody else, start with good news. When you're. When you're struggling getting through a homework assignment or a work project, Good news. Good news first. When you're reaching the deadline, good news first. When there's something you can't control, good news first. When you're gritting your teeth because nothing's going well, good news first. And even if the good news isn't that it's going to work out in the long run- which is the worst thing to say to somebody, by the way- the good news is still: his grace is sufficient for me. His love is overwhelming. His body is not there, which means I don't have to be stuck. Good news first. And there's somebody in this room. I believe it that that you've been living in such a way that, intentionally or unintentionally, has neglected the good news of Jesus, that he died on the cross for your sins, That he rose from the grave on the third day And that you can have an abundant life, an eternal life, when you simply do one thing: Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead. And if if you're living right now without Jesus in your own personal form of hell, because hell is just a world without God existing in it. There's also an eternal hell. Just want to be clear. Ah, I wish I'd said that. Right, I don't want you to spend eternity in hell And I don't want you to live presently in a situation or a mindset that is disconnected from God, And all the Bible says you need to do is call upon the name of the Lord and be saved. So I want to give you an opportunity right now to call upon the name of the Lord, to confess with your mouth, to believe in your heart. So if everybody would bow their heads and close their eyes, we're going to pray a prayer together for the benefit of those who are praying it for the first time. You might repeat after me out loud, for the benefit of those praying it: God, I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God. I believe he died on the cross and rose from the grave. Forgive me of my sin, Make me a new creation, Help me see good news first, and I will follow you into eternity. It's in Jesus's name we pray. Amen and
